Pharmacological actions

Chamomile has been reported to have antifungal and antibacterial activities against gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus , Streptococcus mutans ).The antibacterial activity has been documented for the caumarin constituents (3). Antiallergic and antiinflammatory activities are well documented for chamomile (3). Aqueous alcoholic extracts inhibited 5 – lipoxgyenase and cyclooxygenase activity, and thus the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, known inducers of inflammation . Bisabolol has been shown to inhibit 5-  lipoxygenase .In clinical trials, topical application of a chamomile extract in a cream base was found to be superior to hydrocortisone 0-25% for reducing skin inflammation (4). Chamomile has shown wound – healing properties associated with both the essential oil and the hydrophilic extract (5).
