The plant extracts in Babysed syrup formulation synergistically induce sedation, sleep and analgesic effect in children. Many pharmacological investigations confirm the sedative effect of passiflora (1) Passiflora is helpful in reducing restlessness, anxiety and nervousness. A double – blind randomized trial compared the efficacy of passiflora incarnata extract with oxazepam in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder in human showed that passiflora extract is an effective drug for anxiety disorder. It has been shown that pharmacological effects of passiflora are mediated via modulation of the GABA system including affinity to GABA(A) and GABA(B) receptors and effects on GABA uptake(2). Harmaline is a sedative agent in both children and adult patients . Commision E has approved its use in sleeplessness. Jujubosides from jujube extract has been widely used in treating insomnia and anxiety , and it has been shown that the serotonergic system may involve in the hypnotic effect of Jujubosides(3) . Chamomile's effect on the nervous system seems to be an anticonvulsive and sedative . Sedative effects may be due to the glycosides luteolin and epigenin which aid relaxation. Lemon Balm is a sedative plant and potentiated the sedative effect of other plant extracts in the formulation Peppermint leaf extract along with ginger has anti-spasmodic action and relieves the pain in gastrointestinal tract
